Avene Cleanance K – Review

Back in December I went onto the Avéne website and filled in the skin survey, a week later two little samples landed on my doormat. Once you’ve filled out the questionnaire you get sent two samples that are catered to your skin type, I received the Avéne Cleanance K Cream – Gel and a gel cleanser. The cleanser was nice but nothing special, however instantlyI loved the moisturiser. Once I’d used up my sample I bought the full size version which I have been using every night for about a month now.

The Avéne Cleanance K is a moisturiser which contains exfoliating AHAs and BHAs. It says it is for oily / blemish prone skin and claims to unclog pores, absorbs shine, and normalises oil secretion. I use Avéne cleanance K on cleansed skin in the evening, and I find that it absorbs easily and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. Like it says on the box it has a consistency somewhere between a gel and a cream.

It has dramatically reduced the number of blemishes I get and how long they hang around for. It has also stopped the build us of dry skin around my nose. I really love this product, my skin just looks so much more even after using it and it feels so soft. The only bad thing about this is that it doesn’t smell great. I can’t put my finger on what it is but it isn't very nice.

My boyfriend suffers from acne around his mouth and I've been making him use this every evening too, and it’s really improved the state of his skin. It had definitely controlled my oil production; I've noticed a big difference to how oily my skin is after a day at uni.

Overall I think that this is a great product, you get the exfoliating AHAs without the big price tag. This costs £10.50 for 40 ml and it available from boots. I used the points on my advantage card to buy this so that was a bonus! Although I don’t want to think about how much money I've spent in Boots to amass £10 worth of points! I would definitely recommend going on the Avéne website and getting some samples sent, it’s such a great way to try out products.

My Top Products for Under £5 - FOTD

I’m always on the lookout for good quality high street makeup for reasonable prices. Today this post is going to be about my favourite products I’ve found for under £5. I’m going to do a £10 one at some point next week too.

1) MUA Mosaic Blush – English Rose - £2.50
I bought this because I saw it recommended on a blog for pale skin. It looks a bit scary in the packaging but it gives a really pretty sheer pink finish. There isn’t a great deal of pigmentation but it’s perfect when you want a pretty shimmer on your cheeks. It also works great as a highlighter and that’s how I’ve used it on my face below. Overall for £2.50 I think it’s a great everyday product and the name is lovely.

2) Collection 2000 – Fast Stroke Eyeliner - £2.99
This is a product that has been in my makeup bag since I was about 15. Well not this specific one, I’m probably on my 10th one by now. It’s the first liquid eyeliner I’ve ever bought and I don’t think I’d ever buy a different one. It gives an amazingly defined line and is so easy to use. Definitely my Holy Grail liquid eyeliner.

3) Dainty Doll Blush – 003 Money Talks – £4.14 (Amazon)
I guess you’re all getting bored with reading about these by now but I thought I’d include it as it is under £5 and it is my favourite ever blush. You can see a full review of it here. It’s a gorgeous warm brown colour with some added shimmer. I love using it with a highlighter and in the look below I’ve used it with the mosaic blush.

4) Rimmel Moisture renew lipstick - Notting Hill Nude - £1
Now this was a complete steal, I found it in pound land for £1! I wasn’t sure what the colour would be like as all I had to go on was the sticker on the bottom. As it was only £1 and it had the word nude in the title I thought I’d go for it. I’m so glad I got this the colour turned out to be right up my street and it has such an amazing creamy formula. I can use it on my lips even when they’re at their peak of dryness so it has been my go to lipstick over the winter months.  I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for more of these in pound land.

5) Rimmel - Stay Matte Pressed Powder - £3.99
This is another long standing staple of my makeup bag. I have oily skin so a pressed powder has always been an essential of mine. I’ve tried many out over the years but I always end up coming back to this one. It’s remarkable value for money and keeps you looking matte and fresh all day so a great product in all areas.

Wishlist - Skincare and Some Exciting News

Hey guys,
I'm finally home for Easter woooooo. I'm so relieved to be having a bit of a break to recuperate. I still have some deadlines to be aware of but their not as urgent as my previous ones so I'm going to take this week to give my body some much needed rest.

Some exciting news is that my Boyfriend and I decided to book a last minute holiday for next week :). We're going to Majorca for a week, I'm praying for some nice sunny weather whilst we're there. The boyfriend just found out that he's got a paid placement at the University this summer so this is what we're doing to celebrate. I'll probably schedule a few posts while I'm away and I'm going to try take lots of lovely photos to do a photo diary when I get back if people are interested?

I'm just so grateful to be getting away from this terrible weather. I'm fed up of having dull tired looking wintery skin. GIVE ME A TAN! this paleness had been going on for too long. Anyway until I get a bit of colour back here's my wishlist of skincare products to give my skin a bit of life again.

I've decided I'm going to invest in one of these products, which would you recommend?

Topshop Whimsical - Review

Hey guys,

Today I have another lipstick review for you all. I bought Whimsical from Topshop way back in September, so a long time ago now. It was my first Topshop lipstick purchase and it was a toss-up between three in the store. I’m not sure why I chose this one, I really liked it in the shop but when I got it home and looked at it in the harsh light of day I wasn’t so sure.

The colour itself is a peachy / coral nude and the formula is thick and creamy. I love the colour, I think it’s great for everyday wear and also stays put all day. I put it on before lunch one day and after a very large and delicious meal someone complimented me on my lipstick, I was shocked to see it still in place. Another positive is the adorable packaging, well done Topshop.

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with is because as you can see from the picture it can be a bit drying. The finish is matte and unless my lips are in particularly good condition I can’t wear it without them looking dry. I also find that it has to be paired with the right blusher to pull it off.  Hopefully as we get into summer when my lips are soft and my face has a bit more colour Whimsical will suit me again. For now I just have to make sure my lips are in tiptop condition and slap on a bit of bronzer or nice blusher if I want to wear this lipstick.

When I've taken my time over my makeup and my lips are lovely and smooth it’s one of my favourite lipsticks and I love wearing it. You can get this from Topshop stores or online for £8 which is great value for money.

What do all think of the lipstick?

Lots of Love

What's on My face #1

Hey guys,

I haven't don one of these before but they're always something I love to read so I thought I'd have a go.

After cleansing and moisturising I applied RMK make up base. I received this product in my very first JolieBox last year and I do actually really like it I just often forget to use it. I then applied Estēe Lauder double wear foundation with my real techniques foundation brush and then used my buffing brush to work it in. I used Garnier roll on concealer under my eyes and used Rimmel stay matte pressed powder to set everything.

For my cheeks used Dainty Doll blush 003 - Money Talks on my cheeks and used 001- Hippy Shake to highlight. I applied both with my Real Techniques Blush brush which I got for Christmas and absolutely adore. I used the gel eyeliner that I received in my March Birchbox on my upper eyelids, I've never used a gel eyeliner before but I think I'm a convert. It gives such a nice effect especially for a Smokey eye. The Urban decay eyeliner went on the bottom lash line and I used my favourite mascara Clinique High Impact mascara on my top and bottom lashes. I finished off my eyes with a light brown eye shadow from a Clinique palette (it's called the colour surge eye shadow duo) and the purple (flash) from my Urban decay peacock palette you can read my full review of this palette here. I finished the look off with my favourite lipstick MACAngel.

I Love this look and this is pretty much how I do my makeup for everyday, minus the eyes. I'm still obsessed with my Dainty Doll blush full review here and my MAC lipstick full review here as you can see and they're definitely products I reach for everyday. As you can see my urban decay eyeliner is running out, I think I might cry when I can no longer sharpen it.

What do you think of this look?

Lots of Love

Dainty Doll Blushers - Review

Hey guys,

I feel like I've been on a bit of a posting rampage these past few days which is pretty bad as my lab report is due next week but oh well this is so much more fun!

I've been reading on various blogs recently that Dainty Doll products were being reduced. I've always wanted to try this brand as I have really pale skin especially in the middle of winter. When I heard they were reduced a hopped on over to Amazon and bought three of the blushes.

Dainty Doll Blushers - Review

Dainty Doll is designed by Nicola Roberts from girls aloud and is aimed at people with pale skin. I there was four different shades of powder blush available and I decided to go for 001 - Hippy Shake, 003 - Money Talks and 004- you are my sunshine. The packaging is sleek and classy, It's a black compact with a mirror inside and perfect got slipping into your handbag. You get 7g of product which doesn't seem like much but they're so pigmented you don'y need to use much. The best point about them in my opinion is the unique colours. I apply the blush in the morning and it actually lasts pretty well. I have pretty oily skin so I don't think my makeup is ever going to last the day but this does quite a good job.

Dainty Doll Blushers - Review

From Left to Right - Hippy Shake / Money Talks / You are My Sunshine

001- Hippy shake £2.45: This is such an interesting colour for a blush and I wasn't sure what it would look like on but I absolutely love it. It's a pale lilac and it's great to wear by itself or as a highlighter. The blush itself has a smooth texture and applies like a dream. it's really pigmented and shimmery so one sweep with my real techniques blush  brush is plenty.

003- Money Talks £2.45: This is my new go to everyday blusher. I've always wanted to be able to wear brown shades but because of my pale skin they never look good. This is a perfect brown and had so many uses. It's great for contouring or giving you a subtle glow. It has a shimmery pigment to it and I often wear it along side Hippy Shake. It's so hard when you'e pale for bronzer not to look too OTT but this is perfect and I'm so happy I can finally wear this colour. As you can see from the picture below it adds a beautiful glow

004 - You are My Sunshine £2.99: This Blush is a beautiful pinky / coral shade. Its super pigmented and has a gorgeous shimmery finish. This one is probably the most in your face out of all of them, however it's still great on my pale skin. It looks rather bright in the packaging but it applies really well and gives a lovely finish. Plus I love the name, it's one of my favourite songs :).

Dainty Doll Blushers - Review
Money Talks

Overall I think these are great blushes for the money, I've always been put off wearing blush in the winter because my skin in so pale but these look great on my skin effortlessly. As I said I ordered these off Amazon but I think they're available in a lot of other places for this discounted price too so snap them up quick. I think they're even cheaper on Amazon now!

The other blush I don't have is a pale pink and after how much I love these I'm thinking I might complete my collection.

What do you think of these blushes?

Jumping on the Bloglovin Bandwagon

Hey guys,
There seems to be a bit of a kurfuffle about whether GFC is going to be scrapped or not. At the moment it hasn't been confirmed but it looks like it's a possibility. People seem to be moving over to bloglovin and now I know I can import the blogs I follow over there I think I might give it a go.

You can follow me on Bloglovin here
Also my Twitter handle is @ascholarlife and I'd love it if you could follow me there too.

Bloglovin actually has a really sleek user interface, I'm not really sure why I havent used it before tbh.

Anyway this hasn't been the most exciting of posts so here's a picture of some cute marshmellows

100th Blog post - My Life in Pictures

Hey guys,
I'm so excited to be writing my 100th blog post, I can't believe I've written that many! Beacuse of this milestone I thought I'd do a bit more of a personal post. I've gathered together some pictures I've found of some of the exciting events in my life. Hope you like them!

So I'm in the orange high chair and this is my 1st birthday party! look how little I am!
This is me with one of my family friends, I'm probably around 4 years old and had bright blonde hair!

I was so pleased to get into Grammar school and when I got there I met a group of amazing girls and we're still just as close now.

In year 10 we went on a residential trip to Berlin and it was so much fun. We had great weather and saw some interesting sites. We went as part of our history course and visited a concentration camp which was something I'm really pleased I've been able to experience.

In year 11 I was lucky enough to be able to go on the school ski trip. It was my first time skiing and I loved it, I can't wait to get to go again.

After we'd finished our A-level exams we went on a girls holiday to Malia! It was amazing but pretty messy.

I got into Nottingham uni to study Chemistry and this is one of our pictures from freshers week.It was a Neon night and I didn't sleep all night. Fresher's was probably the best week of my life and I wish I could go back so bad

This is an event at nottingham uni called 7 legged. It's a bar crawl where you're tied to six other people. It was such a laugh but it's so hard to stay upright.

This is me and my boyfriend on holiday in Portugal.

All dressed up for our hall summer ball

This was my boyfriend's 21st night out. we dressed up as Harry Potter characters and was such a good night out. We don't get to go out as much in third year so when we do it's always fun.

I hope you've enjoyed this post, I wanted to write a bit more but I find it really hard to write about this kind of thing. Let me know if you did?

Lots of Love

Jessica GELeration Manicure

Hey guys,

It was my 21st birthday back in October and my housemates got me a voucher to get my nails done at Changes Beauty Clinic in Nottingham. My housemate had gotten a GELeration manicure there and it looked amazing so I really wanted to get one. I can't believe it took me almost five months to get round to booking my appointment! I've just been so busy but I managed to find the time on Saturday to go down and  get them done.

I'd booked myself in for a Jessica GELeration manicure, I'd never heard of the brand Jessica before but I'd heard some good things about gel manicures. When I got there I was greeted by Laura who made me a lovely cup of tea whilst I looked at the huge colour range they had. After umming and ahhing about which colour to chose I decided on a pale blue, I think it was called sky high. My nails were done by Laura who was so lovely and we had a nice chat over the cup of tea. I'd never gotten my nails done professionally before so it was all very exciting. The manicure itself used UV light to set the polish and lasts up to three weeks without chipping.

Laura started by sorting out my cuticles and giving my nails a good file.  After the polish was all set Lara gave me a quick massage with some moisturiser and we were all done. The nails themselves look amazing, and I've been in labs all day for two days and done two lots of washing up and there is no sign of chipping, they look as perfect as they did when they were freshly done.

I would definitely advise getting a Gel manicure done, it's so nice to not have to worry about my nails chipping, or having to paint them again anytime soon. I would also recommend changes beauty clinic, Laura and Caroline were both so friendly and the clinic itself was so pleasant to be in.
You can check out their website here for more details, or their facebook page here.
